“Sweet Hour of Prayer” originated from the heart of William W. Walford, a blind preacher in Coleshill, Warwickshire, England. Despite lacking formal education, Walford possessed a remarkable memory, often reciting extensive Bible passages during his sermons. [1]
In 1845, Thomas Salmon, a Congregational minister acquainted with Walford, visited him and listened as Walford recited a poem he had composed. Lacking the ability to write, Walford relied on his memory to preserve his compositions. Salmon transcribed the poem and sent it to the New York Observer, where it was published on September 13, 1845. [2]
The hymn gained wider recognition when William Batchelder Bradbury, an American composer known for tunes like “Jesus Loves Me,” set it to music in 1861. Bradbury’s melody complemented Walford’s heartfelt words, solidifying “Sweet Hour of Prayer” as a cherished hymn in Christian worship. [3]
